HISTORY

St.Ann’s School of Nursing, Vijayawada now administered by Society of the Sisters of St.Ann, Luzern (SAL). It is a religious minority institution under article 30(1) of the constitution of India. St.Ann’s Educational Society has for its main aim to administer the School of nursing by imparting an all round formation, religious, moral, social and physical based upon the principles of Roman Catholic Christian faith primarily to the members of catholic Christian community.

The nurses training programme was started in 1944 with a Telugu medium lower grade midwifery training. The same course was started in English medium in 1947. In 1948 advanced grade midwifery was added. The next and most important step in the development of this school of nursing was the starting of General Nursing in the year 1954. In 1958 the lower grade midwifery training was replaced by the auxiliary nurse midwifery training of 2 years duration, which was discontinued in the year 1969. Today our school of nursing conducts only the diploma programme in General Nursing and Midwifery of 3 years duration in line with Indian Nursing council syllabus. This school has been recognized by the State Nursing Council and the Indian Nursing Council right from its inception. The permanent recognition was given in the year 1957.
The infrastructure facilities are very good and are in accordance with the INC requirements. The School is well equipped with a very good library, various and latest teaching aids, laboratory for various purposes and all other facilities. Adequate and comfortable hostel facilities are also available within the campus.
Inspectors from the State Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council adjudged it as one of the best schools in the country. The achievements of the students both in academic and co-curricular activities are quite credible.
Committed to the Nation Health Services and the development of young girls in this field, St.Ann’s School of Nursing continues the healing ministry of Christ, imparting a Professional Nursing education and instil in them a true Spirit of Service to the Humanity.

Aim:

St. Ann’s College of Nursing aims at imparting professional Nursing education to aspiring young women according to the Christian Spirit of the Catholic religion for the health care of the people.

This College is open to all irrespective of religion, caste, or community. This institution endeavours to give its students not only professional training in Nursing but also to instil in them a true spirit of service to the humanity so that they may emerge as fully developed mature women ready to serve the needy world.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION:

Science and Technology are developing in leaps and bounds. In the field of Medicine and Nursing too there is a lot of development. Therefore the management felt the need for starting a College of Nursing in order to give our students advanced knowledge and skill in Nursing.  The need of Krishna District in general and of Vijayawada in particular is to have a college of nursing that can keep up high standards in the said profession.  With our rich experience in managing and administering St.Ann’s School of Nursing over five decades our management decided to have a Degree College of Nursing at Vijayawada as we have got dedicated and experienced sisters to teach in the College.

The marvellous and miraculous intervention of our magnificent God, made, what was considered as a dream in to a vivid reality – the existence of St.Ann’s College of Nursing. The academic year was formally inaugurated on 24th November 2003 by His Lordship Most Rev. Mallavarappu Prakash.

The College of Nursing conducts degree programme in B.Sc Nursing of 4 years duration, in accordance with the University and INC Syllabus. Dr.NTR University of Health Sciences affiliated, State Nursing Council and INC have recognized our College right from its inception.

Our College also conducts a few other courses in collaboration with IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University). They are:

Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing

It is a degree programme of 3 years duration through distance mode. The students attend the classes in 2 spells every year, each spell consisting of a month duration i.e. in the month of April and September Respectively. It was inaugurated on 17th March 2010 by Dr.N.Mohanan, Regional Director of IGNOU Regional Centre, Vijayawada and Dr.Krishnaiah, Deputy Director of IGNOU Regional Centre. The students enrolled in each batch are 30. Until now 9 batches have completed their course meritoriously. For the institutions honour and pride three of our students from 1st, 5th, and 6th batch received The “Gold medal” for securing the highest mark all over India under IGNOU.

Certificate in Community Health (CCH)

It is a certificate course of 6 months duration. Also known as MLHP (Mid-Level Health Providers). It is an initiative by the Health and Family welfare department, Government of India, under National Health Mission (NHM), and is functioning now in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The AP government has selected thirteen Nursing colleges: twelve of Government and our college.The first batch was enrolled in the month of July 2018. The intake of students is 30 per batch in the first 3 batches and 60 in the 4th and 5th batches respectively. The eligibility for admission is B.Sc. Nursing. During the training period all the expenses of the students will be met by the Govt. After the training they will be posted to the Sub centers with a starting salary of Rs.25000/- and additional 10,000/- according to their performance every month.Four batches have successfully completed the course and the 5th batch is pursuing the training.

Certificate in Home Based Health Care (CHBHC)

It is a certificate course under IGNOU consisting of 6 months duration with 2 sessions. The first batch students have been enrolled and the sessions had begun in the month of April 2018.
